Today, it was reported that a "tearful" Dennis Nifong will resign as DA. It's about time. Months ago, when ethics charges were finally formally brought onto Nifong, I wrote how maybe justice might be finally on it's way to being done in this case. Today's resignation, combined with stirring testimony from one of Nifong's victims, were a step in that direction.
Nifong should have resigned a long time ago, and I truly hope the North Carolina bar takes away his liscense. What he did in using the law to win election and in effect ruin the future of 3 pretty decent kids, as it turns out. 3 kids with decent grades, living a normal college life. Until Dennis Nifong used the power and force of his office to take that all away for his own personal ambitions. His actions were beyond anything close to being proper.
We don't even need to get into the fact that the accuser in the case was a bona fide nut job, Nifong's reckless and irresponsible, and possibly illegal handling of this case and it's evidence are enough that he has no place in this office.
Hopefully, there will be at least some resources available so that some of Mr Nifong's past cases may be reviewed. Maybe this is the 1st time Nifong ran into someone who actually could stand up to his wall of force that he used the government as. Maybe not. But it's worth checking into, in my opinion.
In the meantime, I hope that the bar has the good sense to weed this rat from their ranks.
