In Sean's defense, his information is accurate... as it was reported early yesterday and the night before. Since then (yesterday afternoon and this morning), there have been numerous reports like the one that you'd cited above, including denials from both Turkish and Iraqi government officials that Turkish forces had crossed the borders.

So... nearly 48 hours ago, Sean was right, at least in some respects. Not so much now.

And how exactly is this Bush's fault? The tension between Turkey and the Kurds goes back to the partitioning of the old Ottoman Empire after World War I. Turkey doesn't want Kurdistan to gain autonomy, so they have tried for decades to put down any kind of ethnic self-determination in their easternmost region. The fact that Kurdistan is the most prosperous Iraqi region is galling Ankara to no end, since this gives Kurds new non-Turkish national aspirations. So the Turkish military has been hinting at an incursion or two into American-controlled Kurdistan to quell the good fortunes of the Kurds.

If you need a scapegoat, blame Winston Churchill, who drew the lines of the Middle East and sliced Kurdistan right in three.

who's they? when have i ever said that no one has a right to protect their borders? just because i want the 1986 laws to actually be enforced has no bearing on that.

There was no conquest or plunder in this action. This was pursuit.



It was a general comment (hence the "they"). In your case, however, you protest that we have a right to enforce our borders yet you criticize every single attempt to actually DO so. Saying we have the right without giving us the power is a bit inconsistent, is it not?

i've stated that some plans look simply unfeasible or impractical. but what "power" am i not giving?

i simply contend that actual enforcement of the 86 laws would dry up the incentive to come here. but "immigration reform" hasn't been anything about that. some of it has been a thinly veiled exercize in racism in my view. and at the same time, the people who want to get to stay here have acted like idiots waving mexican flags around in america. three's alot of "runnin east lookin for a sunset" on this issue, imho..on many sides. but i can't recall refusing any powers.
