overcrowding or special treatment?

TMZ is reporting an "unimpeachable" source is saying that heiress Paris Hilton has been released from an LA County jail after only 3 days. So much for her being treated worse than anyone else.

Of course, the reaction will be that she was treated too leniently. The counter will be that overcrowding is common in that facility, and early releases for non violent offenders is common. Of course, it was reported that Paris was in a room with a bunk bed, but no roomate. So one has to question just how "overcrowded" they were. Or is this common to use the "overcrowding" issue to get celebrities out extra early?

Recently, a former reality show star was released in a similar fashion after only a day or 2 in jail. Overcrowding was cited then as the reason for the early release.

A news conference is scheduled for later today to explain the circumstances of Paris's release.

***UPDATE 10:15am ---- According to prison officials, Paris's attorneys have reached an agreement with the court where she will serve the rest of her sentence, which will be restored to a full 45 days , under house arrest.

****UPDATE 10:35am ----- apparantly, Guy was on the right track(see comments). the official from the prison said she was released because "dozens of doctors" over the past 3 days figured that a few germs excluded the billionare heiress from serving like anyone else. anyone remember kevorkian being at death's door himself w/ cancer et al? and he couldn't get squat. plus, the officials have said her time in prison is counted as 5 days. how is that? i know how officers of the court typically count time, and it's ALWAYS to the con's disadvantage. here, they appear to be giving her full day credit for a few hours of sunday and today (thursday). i smell a bribe or something equally as rotten. if being sick is cause to be released from jail, then i want to see everyone else who catches a lil cold get the same treatment. that should end our overcrowded prison problem real quick.

****UPDATE 6:40pm ----Turns out, according to Dan Abrams, that the court is pretty upset because they didn't release Paris. The Sherriff pulled an "exective decision" out of his ass, which apparantly is legal, according to the Sherriff. That sounds familiar, lol. But seriously, this thing is really starting to stink bad. Like 3-5 day old garbage.

****UPDATE 9pm ---- Judge orders hearing @ 9am (PT) to determine if Paris should go back in. Seems this deal ain't quite done yet. Apparantly, the sentence motion included several caveats which included "no electronic monitoring" and the legal talking heads seem to agree (for a change) for the most part that she could go back.

****UPDATE 6/8/07 3:40pm---- Paris has been ordered back to jail to serve her sentence. Reports say she was screaming as she was led back to jail. County Supervisors who helped rule in the decision called her a spoiled brat and the release of Miss Hilton to her posh estate a "total mockery of due process." Score one for the people.

You have GOT to be kidding me. Three days for a twenty-one day sentence that was leniently reduced from even longer?

That's hot.

the 21 (actually i heard 22, but what's a day matter?) days was what experts speculated that the typical sentence would be if the early release pattern at the jail held true. they already knew that with "good behavior" she would get credit (like anyone would) to make her actual stay 30 days (1 day off for every 2 good days).

but this is a lil suspect.

Her lawyers claimed that the facility was rife with staf germs. It does make one wonder though. Why is she more susceptible to germs than anyone else?

i have updated the article @ 10:15...apparantly a deal was reached to have her serve her sentence under house arrest.

I've read that driving on a suspended license rarely carries any jail time in California at all. If the taxpayers there want to pay extra to make a point about celebrities, whatever, but I'm willing to bet there are plenty of other more deserving people who they could put in that bunk.

It's a no-win situation for the jail. That much attention, that much threat of legal retaliation by the Hilton family, all for a charge of driving without a license? The judge should have fined her a lot of money and forced her to do community service. Then instead of leeching the system she would have been donating to it.

It was a probation violation for a DUI, Baker. It's a little different when probation violations enter the picture. I agree, though, they'd be more likely to get the point across by having her cleanup the freeway in a bright orange jumpsuit that's SO NOT hot!

correct, but as it was pointed out to me, it ws actually 2 violations.

yeah, the la freeway isn't congested enough already, lol. imagaine the media circus and paparazzi. apparantly the circus just outside the prison was "ridonkulous."

This is the worst possible non-punishment they could mete. I think house arrest is hilarious, considering have you seen her house?! Talk about a miscarriage of justice. Justice here, in Mr. Conners' word, is "ridonkulous" indeed.

Do a little more research! people in Protective custody are in cells by themselves, always. to use this to show some kind of favoritisim is typical of you these days sean, find a point to make YOUR point and go from there.

Not when you look at the statistics of how people are sentenced. The person on the show I was watching said that Hilton's charge vs. sentence was almost unheard of in California for someone with her record. All the judge did was create a headache for the system.

There are a lot of other things she could have been forced to do that would be just as helpful and bar the paparazzi completely. I worked off a ticket down in the bowels of a big courthouse making photocopies of records. You don't have to be on a chain gang to offer public service.

She definately should have been heavily fined and done community service somewhere where the help is sorely needed! There's no way that the public as large won't think that money talks, as usual!

geeeeeeez baker...lighten up. that was a joke.(did ya miss the "lol"?) really seein red today, eh?

here's another (hopefully you'll laugh, rather than attack this time) ...maybe the "community service" she should do is teaching poor women who pump out kids how to give a decent blow-job. or at least teach em how to put the condom on with their mouth.

tasteless? sure...but only if you take it seriously.

and it comes to light that the cause for the release was...trumpets...mental anguish. Nice to know that all you need to do to get released from prison is get really upset and anxious.
