Libertarian Gets "Rock Star" Greeting, Standing Ovations

Presidential hopeful, Ron Paul storms into New Hampshire...

Congressman Ron Paul (R-Tx) was "treated like a rock star" delivering his anti war / limited government message in New Hampshire over the weekend. This according to the Politico's report on his trip there, which began Thursday.

Paul got standing ovations on both his entrance and exit from the stage. His messages?

On the Iraq war..."The worst thing that could happen to al-Qaeda is for that war to end," Paul said.

On fiscal responsibility... "I think the Republicans have failed to live up to their commitments to smaller government."

On personal freedom...."The message is always the same - government intrusion into our lives is way too much."

Paul, who was the Libertarian candidate in 1988, has been considering a run for the White House under the GOP banner in 2008. Of course, like many "2nd tier" candidates, he faces a fundraising and inherent name recognition challenge. Fortunately, he does plan to debate on April 4th with the other contenders. Hopefully, that will get his and perhaps other worthy candidates on the republican side who aren't Mitt, John or Rudy views out for our consideration. Real Conservatives like Jim Gilmore, the christian right's early favorite, Sam Brownback and California's Duncan Hunter.

Fans of lower taxes should like Paul's message. The Texas Congressman has been honored by such organizations as the non partisan "Tax Payer's Union" who recently gave him his 10th consecutive "Tax Payer's Friend" award. An award only shared with 30 congressional members last year.

“If every member of Congress voted like Representative Paul, Americans could enjoy much lower taxes and less waste in government,” stated NTU President John Berthoud. “Overburdened taxpayers in Texas and across the nation owe Mr. Paul a debt of gratitude for his hard work on their behalf.”

Ron Paul is a longshot in the dark at best to win his party's nomination. But I sincerely hope he gets a legitimate shot at running for the office of President. It seems that Libertariansism as a philosophy, at least, has gained much momentum amongst republicans, especially those displeased with the reckless fiscal responsibility of it's party in recent years. Ron Paul is an articulate person who can send this message out further. As I look forward to 2008, 1 thing I most hope for in the elections is that we, the people, get to hear from as many voices and different viewpoints as possible. Ron Paul represents a growing constiuentcy, not only within the GOP, but in America. As we have seen Liberalism, Neoconservatism and other philosophies stumble, Libertarianism has been growing in popularity all over America. People see Libertarian philosophies, which are more about "we, the people" and our freedoms and rights than it is about the big goverment and waste that both of the major parties endorse, not with their words usually, but by their actions and votes, as a common sense, constitutionally based alternative.

I, for one, hope that Congressman Paul gets his chance to bring his message to a wider audience in the 2008 election.
