Last fall, The whole country got all riled up about Mark Foley. I got all riled up about Mark Foley. And make no mistake about it. Foley's behavior was wrong. But after this election, I have heard nothing about anyone doing anything to protect underage children, and that's sad. It follows a long tradition of Americans reacting to headlines and not following up afterwards. Just look at post Katrina New Orleans if you need more evidence of that.

When Foley resigned from the House, the whole country seemed all prepared to maybe finally get serious about protecting our children. But I guess not. The other day, I was listening to some "middle of the road, adult contemporary" radio and the following song came on...

You're 16 (You're Beautiful And You're Mine) Lyrics

By Richard Sherman and Robert Sherman
Recorded live at the Budokan, Tokyo, Japan

"Okay, this is for all the little girls in the audience, including you. Goes like this."

A one, two, one, two, three!

YOU COME ON LIKE A DREAM, PEACHES AND CREAM,
LIPS LIKE STRAWBERRY WINE.
YOU'RE SIXTEEN, SO BEAUTIFUL AND YOU'RE MINE. (mine, all mine, all mine)

YOU'RE ALL RIBBONS AND CURLS, OOH, WHAT A GIRL,
EYES THAT SPARKLE AND SHINE.
YOU'RE SIXTEEN, SO BEAUTIFUL AND YOU'RE MINE. (mine, all mine, all mine)

YOU'RE MY BABY, YOU'RE MY PET,
WE FELL IN LOVE ON THE NIGHT WE MET.
YOU TOUCHED MY HAND, MY HEART WENT POP,
OOH, WHEN WE KISSED, I COULD NOT STOP.

YOU WALKED OUT OF MY DREAMS AND INTO MY ARMS,
NOW YOU'RE MY ANGEL DIVINE.
YOU'RE SIXTEEN, SO BEAUTIFUL AND YOU'RE MINE. (mine, all mine, all mine)

"Ah, play it for me!"

"Oh, play that thing, Randy!"

"Saxophone!"

YOU'RE MY BABY, YOU'RE MY PET,
WE FELL IN LOVE ON THE NIGHT WE MET.
YOU TOUCHED MY HAND, MY HEART WENT POP,
OOH, WHEN WE KISSED, I COULD NOT STOP.

YOU WALKED OUT OF MY DREAMS AND INTO MY CAR,
NOW YOU'RE MY ANGEL DIVINE.
YOU'RE SIXTEEN, SO BEAUTIFUL AND YOU'RE MINE. (mine, all mine, all mine)

YOU'RE SIXTEEN, SO BEAUTIFUL AND YOU'RE MINE. (mine, all mine, all mine)

YOU'RE SIXTEEN, YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL AND YOU'RE MINE.

Really? Where is the outrage about Ringo Starr?

Is he alone in the world of music? Heck no. There's Ozzy Osbourne's "Mr Tinkertrain" ...

I’ve been waiting every night after school
For five long years
I’ll keep waiting for you five nights a week
Cuz I’m no good

But, We don’t know who the singer is supposed to be, but what’s in his mind becomes clear....

I’m thirty but I feel like sixteeen
I might even be your daddy
I’m dirty but my body is clean
I might even be your daddy
Age is only the first kink trotted out.

I like you -you like me? yes?
Sorry that I had to gag you
You look better completely undressed
Sorry but I had to have you I like you -you like me? yes?
Sorry that I had to gag you
You look better completely undressed
Sorry but I had to have you
I’m thirty but I feel like sixteeen
I might even be your daddy
I’m thinking more than a kiss Whip me, spank me, grab me

Or Kiss's "Christine 16".....

I don’t usually say things like this to girls your age,
But when I saw you coming out of the school that day,
That day I knew, I knew,
I’ve got to have you. I’ve got to have you.

We don’t know if this desire is mutual or not; nor does it seem to matter. The song is an expression of male bravado and lust. We are invited to presume, of course, that he got his girl....

She’s been around, but she’s young and clean.
I’ve got to have her, can’t live without her, whoo no.

Of course, this is not just relegated to ex beatles and aging metal stars....

Sam The Sham & The Pharaohs’ “Li’l Red Riding Hood” twists the Brothers Grimm children’s fable into an adult tale of seduction....

Hey there Little Red Riding Hood,
You sure are looking good.
You’re everything a big bad wolf could want.

Then there's Motorhead's "Jailbait", the Police's "Don't Stand So Close To Me" and the Stray Cat's "Sexy and 17" and a whole host of others. Has anyone spoken out against the free flow of songs about men molesting underage girls before, during or after the Foley scandal? Not that I know of. It's a shame. I guess the money that these stars have made their respective record companies have kept all the press in that industry, like Rolling Stone, silent on the issue. Rolling Stone never hesitated to lambaste the GOP lawmakers caught up in the Foley Scandal (and they did some good work there) but not a word that I read (and I subscribe) about any of the rock stars that sell magazines for them day in and day out. I can't believe that a community that "hip" to popular music would miss such blatant "messages" that can be "instantly" sent across everyone's airwaves.

How about the Police, "Don't Stand so close to me":

Young teacher the subject
Of schoolgirl fantasy
She wants him so badly
Knows what she wants to be
Inside her there's longing
This girl's an open page
Book marking She's so close now
This girl is half his age

Don't stand to close to me

Her friends are so jealous
You know how bad girls get
Sometimes it's not so easy
To be the teacher's pet
Temptation, frustration
So bad it makes him cry
Wet bus stop, whe's waiting
His car is warm and dry

Don't stand so close to me

Loose talk in the classroom
To hurt they try and try
Strong words in the staffroom
The accusations fly
It's no use
He sees her
He starts to shake he starts to cough
Just like the old man in
That famous book by Nabakov

Don't stand so close to me

Or this hit, by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap:

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

With all the charms of a woman
You've kept the secret of your youth
You led me to believe
You're old enough
To give me Love
And now it hurts to know the truth

Whaoo-oh-oh
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

Beneath your perfume and make-up
You're just a baby in disguise
And though you know
That it's wrong to be
Alone with me
That come on look is in your eyes

Whaoo-oh-oh
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

So hurry home to your Mama
I'm sure she wonders where you are
Get out of here
Before I have the time
To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far

Whaoo-oh-oh
Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

Young girl, get out of my mind
My love for you is way out of line
Better run, girl
You're much too young, girl

Still, there's a difference between singing about being a lech and actually doing it, don't you think? Or do you think Stephen King should also be jailed for thoughtcrime for the things HE writes?

Sorry, I'm not about to give Foley a pass.

Sorry, I missed the reference to the Police...still, my objection stands. It's one thing to write about something, it's quite another to do it.

used to be there wasn't any such thing as 'adult contemporary' (not by that name anyway; there were lawrence welk, perry como, steve & eydie, andy williams and a whole lotta similar 'artists' who inexplciably managed to infiltrate themselves and their recordings into our top 40 rotation despite the fact nobody i knew ever bought any of that junk). our parents--hell, even our older brothers and sisters--may have tolerated the occasional 'cute' or 'catchy' tune by the likes of fabian, frankie avalaon, bobby vinton, etc. (this is more true in rock's dark ages between elvis going hollywood, the death of buddy holly and the arrival of the beatles) but otherwise felt the same way about 'our' music.

we were in our teens--or barely able to wait til we would be--when we first heard and dug and learned to play and sing those songs. we did so because they were about us.

I'll second that.

I was actually most shocked by Mick Jagger's confession to having assassinated both John F. and Robert Kennedy:

I shouted out,
Who killed the Kennedys?
When after all
It was you and me
Let me please introduce myself
I'm a man of wealth and taste....

ummmm...i think ya'll are missing something here. i'm not looking to go arrest ringo starr or ozzy osbourne for soliciting minors. what i am a little surprised with is that the music industry still shamelessly promotes these songs. i am not for government censorship of them (let's get that out of the way before i get accused of it) regardless of how the industry acts. but this is an area where i think the industry could stand up for itself and show some responsibility. and i believe the music media, like rolling stone , that was all over the foley scandal, never mentions a word about these lyrics that promote sex with minors.

and the lyrics are one thing, as i have written about controversial subjects myself, but ringo's line "this is for all the little girls" coming out of his post-middle age mouth is kind of icky to me. and ringo didn't write the song, he chose to cover it. the song was written by richard and robert sherman and orig. recorded by johnny burnette back in the late 50's, early 60's i believe. (i'd have to look it up to be sure)
