President Bush commutes sentence for ex-Cheney Chief Of Staff
Published on July 2, 2007 By Sean Conners aka SConn1 In War on Terror
In a pretty surprising move, reports say that President Bush made a "b-line" towards the Oval office after meeting with Russian President Putin in Maine and emerged with an announcement that Scooter Libby's sentence would be commuted. This means he will serve no prison time. Libby's 250,000 dollar fine and loss of his law license will stand.

The commuting of Libby's sentence comes after 2 of 3 Republican appointed judges upheld the 30 month sentence imposed on Libby for perjury and obstruction of justice.

In his written statement, President Bush gave creedence to the side that says that Libby's crimes are serious and that his felony convictions, and the damage to his reputation that comes with those, will stand. Bush parted ways with those, including the judges who saw Libby's sentence as fair as the President called the prison sentence "excessive."

Supporters of Libby cheered the President's decision and heralded it as a victory while critics saw the founders vision of equal justice trampled on with this move. But that is to be expected. The fact is, that at the end of the day, it is what it is. President Bush had been sidestepping calls to pardon Libby, and now we can see why.

The President agreed with the courts essentially. But he "owed" his base, especially the neoconservative base that is almost alone in their continued support for his Iraq efforts, a big one. And this was it. He wasn't going to let their fellow neocon have to develop a grip of steel on the soap for 30 months. It was legal, it was something that no one will question the President's authority to do so, and it apparantly allows the President to maintain his vision of right and wrong.

And so this round is over.

But I suspect this will only embolden people like Patrick Leahy and Rahm Emanuel, and perhaps energize other Democrats in their investigations into the wiretapping programs, the Attorney General and the Justice Department and whatever else they are working on. Leahy mantioned the possibility of "contempt" charges being brought forth against the White House for refusing sopeanas issued by Congress recently. That possibility probably got a lot stronger with this "commuting" of Scooter Libby's sentence.

That headline is SO not PC.

This was surprising to you?  What surprised me was that the fine and probation were left in tact.  Pansy Pelosi and Bent Reid will do nothing.  Kucinich, Conyers, and a few others with some balls might rabble-rabble a bit, but in the end, the Democrats will do what they do best -- bow down to big daddy Bush, even though only 29% of people in this country like him.

And the Gentleman from Vermont's name is "Leahy." No "e." And Rahm Emanuel is a DLC shill worthy of nothing but contempt.

And I think 15% of those 29% blog here...scary.

They really can't do anything, Bush did nothing illegal.  Of course, let's remember the approval ratings for Reid and Congress as well.

sorry for the typo,,,ya didn't need to be such a tool about it...and emanuel has been an ass, but his idea to defund cheney's office got him a few points in my book and may have caused a spinal transplant to occur.

And I think 15% of those 29% blog here...scary.

lol..best line of the day

yeah, but the bush approval ratings are based on what he's done. the congress's are based on what they haven't done,,,yet.

Eh, Congress is getting a bad rap for one reason: obstructionist Republicans. The same Republicans who whined about "up and down" votes are filibustering almost everything that comes into the Senate. Well, that's no surprise, Republicans are hypocritical jackasses (See: Perjury and Obstruction of Justice opinions by the GOP regarding William Jefferson Clinton Versus I. Lewis Libby).

Rahm knew his defunding plan had no hope of passing, just like Conyers and Kucinich know their impeachment charges won't ever come to a vote.

Bush didn't do anything illegal...this time. Immoral, unethical, sure. But there's plenty of other illegal shennanigans he could be booted out on his lily-white ass for, so it's a moot point.

Oh, well, my leader is the First Emperor of the Moon, Al Gore.

Cheers.

I hope the action of Bush will help elect a democrat in 2008 for President and drive out the GOP wimps in Congress that continue to support our lame president!

And what have they actually accomplished so far?

Also, why is this in the "War on Terror" catagory?
